Far from the expensive, overproduced stadium concerts of big cities, a different kind of show takes place in the Northwoods. On weekends, the bar rooms, dining rooms and patios around St. Germain are lively spots, with local acts that will win you over, one beautiful song at a time.
It’s a chance to savor a great meal and a drink, relax with friends, family, someone special—or even just yourself—and enjoy an authentic Northwoods night out.
All you need to do is settle in to a stool or a chair and enjoy the show.
“It’s family friendly, dog-friendly, super laid-back and up-north super casual,” said Christine Terkelson, owner of Northfork Fin & Filet, an establishment that has music year-round and nightly during the summer, when it opens its patio in Arbor Vitae to live music.
Terkelson said her establishment started offering live music about five years ago and it was very well received. Northfork hosts local, regional and national acts on its expansive patio.
On a summer night, it’s a magical spot as the sun sets – you’ll find people enjoying a fine meal, relaxing in the Adirondack chairs, or getting a drink at the bar. The shows attract families, groups of friends, as well as people who enjoy their own company.
Terkelson said that people can enjoy the shows their own way, whether that includes a fine meal and a martini, or just a relaxing visit on the patio with their dog.
“It’s whatever you want it to be,” she said.
The Timbers Bar & Grill is another lively place to see some local music and enjoy one of Timbers’ famous burgers. People make an entrance here, as only you can in the Northwoods. While some arrive by car, you’ll find others parking their boats, bikes or ATVs.
“All trails lead to Timbers,” said owner Bobbie Hams.
The summer season is especially lively in St. Germain, with many businesses holding shows and other regular special events.
“There’s always something going on,” Hams said.

Any hour of the day, you’re covered at Red Canoe. You might come to the Whitetail Inn for the hand cut ribeye or the grilled red snapper, but you’ll linger to hear the beautiful piano music that’s featured on select nights. Take time to admire the massive white pine logs (they were 200-years old when they were harvested!), the fieldstone fireplaces and whitetail antler chandeliers. The Whitetail is Northwoods dining at its best!
Whitetail Inn features a popular St. Germain event: Martinis in May on May 2. Join the crowd and judge the best as local mixologists compete in three categories: People’s Choice, Judge’s Choice, and Best Presentation. And it wouldn’t be Martinis in May without some great live music—Tony Ocean will be again performing this year.
